The history of the world has been lost to many, and many do not care, not when their very survival is at stake. No, it is the history of the Flare, and the rise of the Purge to put down the terrible disease that people care about hearing. It is those stories that are told to children as they are tucked in at night. Stories of heroes, of villains, of fantastic adventures from both sides of the war - though most chose to spare the children of the truth of what the Purge was. A true parent would never want their children to be exposed to the crimes of war, committed by both sides of this story. The truth is, there are no heroes. No villains. No wonderful adventures of glory and saving the world. There is only survival, and what people will do to survive.
There was peace once, though by now it is but a distant memory in the minds of those old enough to remember. There was order and cohesion, no violent disease and no wastelands, and nothing to fear. It was the year 2100 when scientists noticed there was something not quite right, something that would cause widespread panic if it were to be let out into the public. The magnetic fields protecting the Earth were shifting, and in this shift they were weakening and shrinking. It was predicted that once they had completely shifted and changed, they would return to their protective states as before, but what would happen in the interim? The United Nations had a pretty good idea, so they worked harder than ever to build underground shelters, to protect as much of the population as possible from total annihilation. It took seven years for them to completed so that they may sustain life for an extended period of time, but it was done. It took another full year to move the people into them, but there was a catch - you could only get in if you were family or friends to the government officials or if you could afford it.
There were countless riots and raids on the shelters, but by the year 2109, the doors were closed and were not to open again for another five years. Within a year after the doors were sealed, the solar flares ripped through the gaps in our magnetic shields and viciously ravaged the earth, especially any land within a 2000 mile range to the equator. People were killed at first, only those with just enough shelter survived - though not for long. It was then that the Flare set in, taking root stubbornly and spreading quickly. At first, it acted faster than anyone could react. Within days, those who caught the Flare became bloodthirsty, insane, and even cannibalistic. They were easy to kill having been weakened anyways, but they were terrifying to behold. For five years, there was only the Flare. Animals were rampant with sickness, struggling to adapt and to survive. For five years, what was left of humanity hid and struggled, anxiously awaiting the day when they would be forced back above ground, to try and survive in what the sun flares left for them.
It was 2113 when the people in the shelters surfaced, only to find that the world was nothing like they remembered. There was nothing but desert as far as they could see and they had nowhere to do. Each shelter in every country already lost communications with each other years prior, so each one was one their own. The United States shelter had no one to follow but their present, reelected considering he was the only one to lead them in their dark days within the shelter. He decided they needed to head as far north as possible, and they began their journey. Starting out with over twelve thousand people, within three months they were reduced to eight thousand. People died of dehydration, animal attacks, hypothermia, starvation, and many other things they never foresaw. Within six months, their vehicles were spent and everyone was forced to traverse on foot. Then they began meeting the ones leftover, those with the Flare. At this point in time, many records were lost and many do not know what happened. All they know is that by the time the first Naturals erected the start of Avar City, there were only five thousand of them.
For twenty-two years, they fortified and kept building the city, training protectors and doing everything they could to keep the terrifying disease and the infected, whom they began to call Cranks, out of their precious city. The Avarians did hear rumors of other cities being built around the country, but the President himself was building this one, of course they would not abandon it. Avar City developed into the most well protected City in the United States, and not only that, but it became the largest and closest to normal life than any other city. And yet despite this, things were changing, and there was no way they could have ever seen in coming.
By the year 2143, there was an military force in place to find those infected with the Flare and bring them to various concentration camps to be killed. Scientists and doctors had been working for close to forty years and still, no cure could be found. The people were tired of waiting, and the President was forced to take action. It was genocide in the plainest sense of the term, slaughtering the sick like cattle, and even through these means they could not reach their end. The Flare spread like wildfire. If any bodily fluids came in contact with another person's skin, they caught the Flare - there was no question about it. This plan to rid themselves of the Flare was not working, and it in fact became much, much worse.
The Cranks were learning to fight back. They formed entire societies on their own, creating gangs and tribes to organize themselves against the military. They were turning what was supposed to be murder into war instead - though not even the Cranks saw what was coming next. People began to react differently to the disease. They changed, became stronger, faster, better than the average human. They even gained abilities that could only be described as something like comic book superhero powers, but this only happened to some. Others still became Cranks. Scientists and doctors alike were entirely baffled, unable to explain why some became superhuman and why others simply got sick. The Naturals, terrified of this new phenomenon, demanded that better action be taken. They needed to know they were safe from these Changlings along with the Cranks. It was now the year 2157, and one very young President rose to the occasion after the previous president died.
Ezio Nicolas Minervino was only twenty-three at the time of his election, so the people of Avar City knew he would have a long service until the day of his death. He rose up and announced his plans for something called The Purge, and he would not rest until the Flare was rid of. The Changlings, of course, caught wind of this and were furious. They were people who needed to have basic human rights, but because they were deemed sick with the Flare (despite that they were fully functioning and even better than before), they were to be killed like any other Crank. Being small in numbers at the time, they elected their own single leader by the name of Klaus Fipps, and he was the most powerful among them. He was loved and respected, seen as the one who would save them all and bring peace between Changlings and Naturals, and he even allowed Cranks to make their home beneath the Capitol if they didn't cause trouble. Even the civilian Naturals had some measure of respect for him.
Ezio himself resepcted Klaus for a little while, but within three years of the Purge being announced, Ezio became obsessed with the program and despised the Changlings - especially Klaus. No one knows what caused the extreme change of heart, but many connected the disappearance of his wife to his hatred of Klaus, despite that Ezio still had his son. He had his Purger army ready soon and launched a full scale attack on the city the Changlings had made for themselves perhaps only six years prior. Klaus underestimated Ezio and his army, not prepared for an army that was full equipped and trained to fight against superhumans. Klaus was killed, but Ezio's army was pushed back and suffered perhaps even more casualties than the Changlings did.
It has been twenty years since that first battle, and it is now 2181. The Purger Army is well established and at war with the Changlings, while the Changlings have created two separate gangs. The Carna believe themselves to be better than the humans and are often battle hungry - eager to put down the Naturals. The Fulsi are entirely focused on survival and living in peace, away from the Naturals and keeping the Cranks in line. Ezio is still obsessed with ridding the world of the Flare and ensuring the survival of the human race while the Changlings are doing everything they can to stay alive. [/blockquote][/justify]
